ABOUT Rachel

Since 3rd grade I knew I wanted to be a writer. In college, I majored in technical communication, where I was exposed to instructional design and fell in love. It feels like what I was meant to do.

In 2014, I began working as an instructional designer at S4 NetQuest, a learning development consulting firm. In my time there, my work has grown to be highly interactive, adaptable, and learner-focused as I have been exposed to a wide variety of projects, subject matters, and working styles.

  • My process and approach to solving problems

My first step of any project is to master the subject matter and, through conversations with subject matter experts, establish the audience and learning objectives. I let these three things lead me as I find the best instructional design approach. Unfettered by conventions, this allows me to find an innovative approach that both feels natural and meets objectives. My goal always is to make education interactive, engaging, and fun for the learner, without losing focus on the practical end goals.

Once I’ve determined the best approach, I use an iterative design process that incorporates user testing and input from subject matter experts. This is a highly detailed process where I use my writing skills to distill complex ideas into manageable bites. Sometimes (my favorite times) it involves learning new software programs or new techniques in software I'm already familiar with.

This process results in a learner-focused product that achieves objectives and meets end goals.

  • How I work with people

As a consultant at S4 NetQuest, I have gained substantial experience working with a variety of people and teams. I have learned to look beyond personality types that tend to box people in and find the best way to communicate and work with each unique person and team, whether that means gathering feedback in an email, in the storyboard itself, or in a review meeting. In this way, I adapt to each client’s unique way of working and communicating, creating a symbiotic and authentic relationship with each person I work with.

  • Everything Else

I am always challenging myself to new goals, whether it’s reading my age in books or riding 1,500 miles on my bike in a summer. Practice, patience, and perseverance are common themes in my interests when it comes to taking care of my plants or my sourdough starter, learning a new swing dance move, and reading Dostoevsky. I feel most at home hiking in a forest or trying a new restaurant with my husband and daughter. I am a Ravenclaw, a Mandalorian, a Vulcan, and a Sagittarius.
